6 Tech StackExchange Sites

If you have never heard of StackExchange it is an out of the box social network Q&A platform.  Here are some of my favourite sites that use StackExchange.

http://stackoverflow.com/
The Daddy of StackExchange and the best place for programming Questions & Answers.

http://superuser.com/

http://serverfault.com/
These are StackOverflow managed sites for tech stuff not belonging on StackOverflow – namely for Super User and Sys Admin type questions.

http://uxexchange.com/
A place to ask questions about User Experience disciplines

http://whiteboxhardware.com

All about computer hardware

http://www.aerotechexchange.com/
The place to ask questions about Technology in the Aerospace sector . Full disclosure: This is our own experiment with the StackExchange platform.

The way Stack Exchange works is changing:

Up until now StackExchange has been in bootstrap mode and anyone could create their own Beta site for free.  FogCreek Software, the developers of StackExchange have realised that the pricing model that they had just won’t work and have decided to reboot the entire site creation process.  Existing StackExchange sites such as the ones listed above will remain for the time being if they have had enough traffic as of 8th April, but those that have not developed a full community will ultimately be shut down.

The situation right now is that we have been informed that AeroTechExchange does not qualify to survive longer than 3 months on the StackExchange platform, therefore the future is less than safe.  We have held off promoting the site because of its uncertain future. Now that the survival rules are relatively clear and there is at least one Open Source alternative we can start to make some plans. Watch this space for more StackExchange & AeroTechExchange news.....
